WASHINGTON (KFGO) – Three republican senators and 24 democrats, including Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith of Minnesota, push the federal government to release $4 billion for energy assistance funding as quickly as possible.
This comes as winter is on its way and costs are rising.
State officials say more than 100,000 Minnesotans used the Low Income Heating Assistance Program last winter.
The senators say the average family will likely spend more than $1,000 to heat their homes this winter. That’s a nearly 9% increase from last year.
President Donald Trump’s 2027 fiscal year budget originally proposed eliminating the low income heating assistance program.
