WOODBURY, Minn. (KFGO-KVRR) — A former state senator is jumping back into politics after being convicted of breaking into her stepmother’s house in Detroit Lakes in 2024.
Nicole Mitchell has filed paperwork to run for city council in her hometown of Woodbury, Minnesota. She is one of nine candidates seeking a seat on the council in November.
The requirements to run include being at least 21 upon assuming office. Candidates must be an eligible voter and resident of Woodbury for at least 30 days prior to the general election. They cannot file for any other office at the upcoming primary or general election.
Mitchell was convicted in July 2025 on charges of first-degree burglary and felony possession of burglary tools and sentenced to 180 days in county jail. After her conviction, the Democrat resigned her state senate seat.
