MOORHEAD (KFGO-KVRR) — About a dozen people protested outside the Clay County Courthouse Monday, demanding justice for Sahar Ramirez.
A 2022 video that’s circulated on social media shows a domestic violence incident involving Ramirez, her children and her husband, Andrew Ramirez. Protesters say Andrew’s continued abuse of his wife lead to her death.
Amanda Higgins says the justice system failed Ramirez.
“We just kind of want to put pressure on them to investigate her case further. We obviously don’t believe it was a suicide for many reasons. And then also just the way that domestic violence cases are handled in this community are kind of a joke, and women are not protected, so we want to hopefully have that changed,” Higgins said.
Ramirez was reported missing on June 25, and found dead Tuesday, June 30. Her death was ruled a suicide. An autopsy found pill fragments in her stomach, and a pill bottle was found next to her body.
During the protest, Andrew Ramirez was in court through a Zoom call for civil commitment. Since July 1, he has been held at Prairie St. Johns on a mental health hold. County Attorney Brian Melton filed for a dismissal of the commitment on Friday. The Judge dismissed the case Monday.
