FARGO (KFGO) – Long time KFGO Radio News Director has announced that he is stepping down from the position, effective May 29, 2026. Jurgens joined the heritage radio station in March 1983 and was promoted to news director in 1988. Jurgens is a Fergus Falls, Minnesota native.
“It has been a tremendous honor to be part of the team at The Mighty 790,” Jurgens said. “It has been a wonderful place to work, and I will truly miss the people here and the interaction with the listeners, and such events as the annual KFGO Christmas Party where thousands of listeners show up at 6 a.m. to mark the holiday, and the June picnic in the station parking lot,” Jurgens added.
While Jurgens is leaving KFGO in a full-time capacity, he may return to the station on a part-time basis in the future.
Under his leadership, KFGO News has earned two prestigious Peabody Awards from the University of Georgia School of Journalism, five Marconi Awards from the National Association of Broadcasters, eight Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association and hundreds of other awards from the six-state Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association and Associated Press in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota. In 2024, he was presented with The Pioneer Award from the North Dakota Broadcasters Association.

His leadership in the newsroom and stature in our community make him a Hall of Famer in the state of North Dakota and he will now proudly join the KFGO Hall of Fame as his semi-retirement begins.”
Nate Coen, a recent Minnesota State University Moorhead graduate has joined the news department as an anchor-reporter and multi-media specialist. Coen is also a graduate of Northern Cass High School.
Heitkamp has also announced that veteran TV reporter and anchor Daron Selvig will assume the news director position.
“We are so fortunate to have Daron, he’s well-known across the vast listening area and is a highly-respected journalist, who is very familiar to the people of the Red River Valley.”
Selvig is a proven, recognizable journalist with more than 25 years of experience anchoring, reporting, writing, and producing local news in the region. Selvig spent most of his career at KVLY-TV in Fargo, where he served in roles including reporter, producer, managing editor, and evening anchor. He later worked as a Communications Specialist at AE2S, helping to communicate major regional projects, including the FM Area Diversion Project.
Selvig was born in Ortonville, Minnesota, where he began his broadcast career as a teenager at his hometown radio station, KDIO AM. He and wife, Tami, have three daughters and live in Fargo.
