A New Hampshire man’s decades-long hobby of canning and freely distributing his homemade foods has landed him in legal trouble with Manchester city officials. Daniel Mowery, who grew up canning produce from his family’s garden, has been giving away his homemade jellies, tomatoes, and pickles. However, the Manchester Health Department has ordered him to cease this practice, stating he needs a permit and commercially licensed kitchen to can and distribute food. While state law allows the sale of homemade foods with certain requirements, the city has its own food safety ordinance. Alderman Joseph Kelly Levasseur argues this is a “common sense” issue the community should support, noting Mowery could face fines and violations if the law isn’t changed. Mowery, who sees canning as hard work and tradition, has vowed to continue his hobby. “We’ll see you at the aldermen meeting,” he told the city. (Fox 19)
