Criminal Mastermind of the Week: Lawn Mower Getaway Ends in Self-Inflicted Gunshot
James Mitchell Kerr, 41, took an unusual route to evade police in Michigan — a riding lawn mower. When a deputy showed up to arrest Kerr on outstanding warrants, the suspect refused to dismount his green getaway machine and even accelerated toward the officer.
Cue the slowest chase in police history: Kerr rode off on the mower until it got stuck in a ditch. Despite this setback, he still wouldn’t comply with orders. Instead, Kerr upped the ante by pulling a hidden handgun from the mower itself.
Unfortunately for Kerr’s plan (and his hand), the deputy deployed a taser, causing Kerr to shoot himself accidentally.
Kerr was treated for his self-inflicted injury and now sits in Jackson County Jail, where his lawn mowing days are likely over. Let this be a lesson: A riding mower isn’t exactly a high-speed escape vehicle… especially when it doubles as a mobile weapons cache.
