It’s time to abandon the five-second rule; it might be contributing to your illness. A microbiologist recently stirred up disgust on TikTok with unsettling revelations from a recent experiment conducted at his local movie theater.
Tim Call, a familiar face on the popular social media platform known for his routine assessments of everyday items and environments for bacterial presence, once again grabbed attention with his latest findings. This time, he delved into the question: does the five-second rule hold up on movie theater floors?
For his investigation, Tim purchased a bag of fresh popcorn from the concession stand and then ventured into the theater, where he proceeded to collect a handful of kernels from the floor. He subjected both sets of samples to testing, treating them with a solution before transferring the liquid onto petri dishes and placing them in an incubator.
Through timelapse footage, Tim showcased the stark contrast in outcomes between the two samples. While the fresh popcorn remained uncontaminated, the kernels retrieved from the floor quickly became overrun with fungal and bacterial growth.
Tim emphasizes his motivation for sharing these experiments on TikTok as a means of educating the public about the prevalence of germs on various surfaces.
