WAHPETON, N.D. (KFGO) – Richland County Sheriff Gary Ruhl and his deputies will be wearing special badges next year to mark the department’s 150th anniversary.
The badges are based on the two most common styles used in Richland County over the years, with a gold five-point star inside a silver ring.
Ruhl issued the badges at the monthly staff meeting Wednesday. Ruhl told the deputies they will be able to keep the badges at the end of next year as a “thank you” for their service.
Richland County was formally incorporated on Nov. 25, 1873 and William Root was appointed sheriff at the first county commission meeting.
Albert Chezik became the department’s first elected sheriff in 1874.
