MADISON, S.D. (NSAA) – Dakota State won the 2020-21 North Star Athletic Association Women’s Basketball regular-season title after going perfect 14-0 record in league play. The Trojans secured the No. 1 seed for the NSAA postseason tournament, which kicks off with four opening round games on Tuesday evening.
Dakota State (22-3 overall record) hosts No. 8 seed Presentation (2-23 overall record, 1-13 NSAA conference record, .071 winning percentage in NSAA conference contests) on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in Madison. The Trojans have secured the home court advantage for the postseason tournament.
Number three seed goes to Viterbo (9-6 overall record) with a higher winning percentage in the North Star conference play with an 8-5 record (.615 winning percentage). Mayville State (13-7 overall record) is the fourth seed after finishing the league play with an 8-6 record (.571 winning percentage).
The top four seeds all host the opening round games.
Valley City State and Dickinson State both finished the regular season with an overall record of 8-12 and tied for fifth in the NSAA conference standings with 6-8 record. The Vikings own the tiebreaker after sweeping the season series with the Blue Hawks, securing the No. 5 seed. Dickinson State will be the No. 6 seed in the tournament.
Waldorf is seventh (1-18 overall record, 1-12 NSAA conference, .077 winning percentage in NSAA conference play), holding a higher winning percentage in conference play than the Saints.
Three other quarterfinal rounds are set for Tuesday evening at 5:30 p.m. – Valley City State at Mayville State; Dickinson State at Viterbo and Waldorf at Bellevue.
The four opening round winners will advance to the semifinals on Thursday evening (Feb. 25) at two highest remaining seeds. Times will be announced on a later date. The NSAA women’s basketball championship game is set for Saturday, Feb. 27 at 3 p.m., held at the highest remaining seed.
The NSAA postseason tournament champion earns an automatic bid to the NAIA Women’s Basketball National Tournament’s opening round. The national tournament opening round is scheduled for March 12-13 on campus sites.
The winners of the NAIA’s opening round will advance to the final site at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa. On March 18-23.
