GACKLE, N.D. (KFGO) – A Gackle, North Dakota man is facing assault charges after reportedly trying to fight a Logan County Sheriff’s Deputy who was trying to stop him from shooting fireworks at passing vehicles.
Court documents say around noon on Saturday, August 15, Clinton Aurentz shot roman candles at multiple vehicles that drove by his Gackle home. A Logan County Sheriff’s Deputy was called to the area where they spoke with witnesses, one man told the deputy the roman candle had damaged their vehicle and would have hit him if it was two inches lower.
While the deputy was speaking with the man, Aurentz began lighting more fireworks. Deputies say Aurentz smelled like alcohol and when asked about the fireworks became aggressive with a deputy and was threatening to kill them.
Court documents say Aurentz squared up with a deputy and got in their face before trying to tackle them. The deputies’ body camera and taser were knocked off, and a weapon holster was broken during the incident. Aurentz was pinned to the ground by the deputy and bystanders before being arrested.
While on the ground in handcuffs, Aurentz continued to threaten the deputy and bystanders. When another deputy arrived, Aurentz was helped off the ground and taken to the Stutsman County Jail.
