FARGO, N.D. (KFGO-KVRR) — Cass County Sheriff Jesse Jahner has asked the county commission to slightly increase his department’s budget.
Jahner says the extra funding would be used to help alleviate staffing issues at the Cass County Jail.
“The jail’s a very tough place to work. Currently, we find ourselves down again about 22 correctional officers,” Jahner said. “As we bring the budget forward here, we want to make sure the commissioners know what our challenges are.”
Jahner says the funding request is reasonable, and considers increases in costs for training and other budget items.
“Our overall budget ask, or increase, is about 3.9%, which I feel is very fiscally responsible,” he said. “We feel that’s what we need to keep moving forward as an organization, being fiscally responsible. But then also providing that high level of public safety while also being forward-thinking and innovative.”
Currently, the department has a $30 million dollar budget for 260 employees. The 3.9% increase they’re requesting comes to about $360,000.
