WORTHINGTON, Minn. (KFGO) – The Nobles County Commission in Southwestern Minnesota has rejected a zoning change that would have cleared the way for a $4 billion data center to be built on farmland.
In a 3-2 vote, commissioners voted to uphold a recommendation by the county planning commission to reject the proposal, which leaves the current ordinance as it is. The change would have allowed data centers in agricultural preservation districts.
The proposal was backed by Geronimo Power, a Bloomington-based energy supplier and developer, which had bought 640-acres of land near Brewster and Reading with the intention of building three wind projects, eventually bundled with a data center with renewable energy. The project was set to break ground next year.
