Joe Hayden, a fourth-generation dairy farmer supplying milk for Baileys Irish Cream, uses the HerdPlus app to find perfect mates for his 230 cows. The “Tinder for cows” technology, developed by the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation, matches animals based on ancestry, weight, fertility and milk production data. “Like every other industry, technology is transforming dairy farming,” Hayden said. “We use this app which matches each cow with the right bull so we can breed even better ones for the future.” His family farm near Tinahely, Co Wicklow has supplied Diageo since Baileys launched in 1974. Hayden breeds only his top 80 cows yearly using artificial insemination. (Story URL)
