Nike unveiled Project Amplify, a motorized ankle device designed to help everyday joggers and walkers move with less effort. The wearable technology, developed with robotics company Dephy, targets casual athletes rather than elite runners. “It’s intended to serve athletes who want to go faster and farther with less effort—in effect, a second set of calf muscles,” Nike said in a press release. The first-generation prototype contains a motor, drive belt, and battery wrapped around the ankle. More than 400 athletes have tested the device, which works best for people moving at 10 to 12 minutes per mile pace. Nike plans a consumer launch “in the coming years” but has not announced pricing details. “We’ve always believed movement is medicine, and Project Amplify is the next chapter in that story,” a Nike spokesperson said.
