Oct 20 (Field Level Media) – Florida Panthers goaltender Jacob Markstrom is expected to miss 10-to-14 days with an injury sustained in practice, head coach Paul Maurice announced Tuesday.
The Panthers recalled Cooper Black from Charlotte of the American Hockey League on Tuesday to back up fellow goaltender Akira Schmid while Markstrom is sidelined.
Markstrom, 36, has posted a 3-1-1 record with a 2.21 goals-against average and .897 save percentage in six games this season, including one shutout.
He was acquired in a five-player trade with the New Jersey Devils on June 30. The Panthers picked up Markstrom and forward Angus Crookshank in that deal, while forwards Evan Rodrigues, Jesper Boqvist and prospect Ben Steeves went to the Devils.
An All-Star in 2019-20 and a Vezina Trophy finalist in 2021-22, Markstrom is 267-232-65 with 26 shutouts, a 2.73 GAA and .906 save percentage in 584 games (566 starts) with the Panthers, Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames and Devils.
Black, 25, is 2-1-0 with a 2.67 goals-against average and .919 save percentage in three appearances for the Checkers this season. He has yet to make his NHL debut.
