Walsh County Law Enforcement Center
GRAFTON, N.D. (KFGO/KNOX) – A study has been approved regarding the construction of a new correctional center in Walsh County. The county has been planning for years to build a jail with bigger capacity and upgrades. The project is estimated to have a $24 million dollar budget.
The study will get an engineers opinion on the surrounding infrastructure where the jail would be built. The city of Grafton will fund the study. The Grafton Board of Adjustment has to approve the project before construction can begin, the board will not vote until the study has been finished.
Walsh County Sheriff Ron Jurgens is concerned the study could heavily delay construction. He says the current jail only has 16 beds, and inmates have been sent as far as Williston when the jail runs out of space.
The county held a referendum vote that asked to install a 0.75% sales tax and an increase to the county’s general fund levy to fund the project. Only the tax increase passed, but the Walsh county commission also approved a $10 million bid package.
