A 55-year-old woman remains missing after disappearing during a group swim Sunday near Lovers Point in Pacific Grove, California. The swimmer was with 17 members of a swim club when she vanished around midday. All other swimmers returned safely to shore. A driver at a nearby intersection reported seeing a shark emerge from the water holding what appeared to be a human body before disappearing beneath the surface, according to Coast Guard representative Christopher Sappey. Pacific Grove Police Commander Brian Anderson said swimmers were called to shore after a witness noticed a “large splash” about 100 yards offshore. Coast Guard officials stress a shark attack has not been confirmed. Search crews using air and boat teams resumed operations Monday after finding nothing Sunday evening. Authorities closed Lovers Point, McAbee and San Carlos beaches through Tuesday. (Story URL)
