Sotheby’s is set to auction off a 54-pound Martian meteorite known as NWA 16788 in New York City. With an expected bidding price of up to $4 million, this space rock is a coveted item among collectors. Out of over 77,000 meteorites on Earth, only around 400 are confirmed to be from Mars, making NWA 16788 a rare find. This particular meteorite is significant as it accounts for 6.5% of all known Martian material on Earth and is 70% larger than the next biggest piece. Scientists believe it originated from Mars and landed in Niger’s Agadez Region in 2023. The meteorite will be on display at Sotheby’s New York galleries for public viewing until Tuesday. (Newser)
