New Cheek Swab Test, “CheekAge,” Can Estimate Your Lifespan
Scientists have developed an innovative test called “CheekAge” that uses a simple mouth swab to predict a person’s lifespan. By analyzing chemical markers on specific areas of your DNA, the test provides an estimate of physical aging and mortality that researchers say is even more accurate than previous blood-based methods.
The CheekAge test works by reading data imprinted on genes, which is influenced by lifestyle factors like stress, smoking, alcohol consumption, sleep quality, and diet. Lead researcher Dr. Maxim Shokhirev explained that the test pinpoints tens of thousands of specific DNA spots where chemical markers are attached, giving a clearer picture of how these lifestyle choices affect the aging process.
The study, which gathered data from over 1,500 individuals, found a strong correlation between these genetic markers and the risk of death. Researchers hope this new approach can eventually help track not only lifespan but also age-related diseases and a person’s healthspan—the length of time one can live a healthy, disease-free life.
