Alaska’s New Airport Guardian: Meet Aurora, the Robotic Defender
Alaska’s aviation landscape has received a futuristic addition in the form of Aurora, a cutting-edge robotic dog deployed by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities at Fairbanks airport. This headless, four-legged marvel is set to undertake the crucial task of wildlife hazard reduction, aiming to mitigate incidents of animals interfering with airport operations.
Resembling a Labrador Retriever in size, Aurora boasts versatility in traversing various terrains, ensuring no corner of the airport remains unchecked. Camouflaged ingeniously as a coyote or fox, this robotic sentinel is primed to ward off birds and other wildlife, thereby safeguarding aircraft and passengers alike.
The decision to introduce Aurora comes in response to a pressing need, with Fairbanks airport recording ten incidents of aircraft colliding with animals just last year. As such, Aurora’s arrival signals a proactive measure to address safety concerns and ensure smooth operations at one of Alaska’s key aviation hubs.
