FARGO (KFGO) – The 25th Street South overpass on I-94 in Fargo was damaged when an excavator hauled by a truck struck the underside of the bridge. It happened at about 6:30 p.m. Monday.
The State Patrol said the truck was eastbound, towing a flatbed trailer loaded with the excavator when it hit several of the concrete girders beneath the bridge, causing several chunks of the concrete to fall onto the interstate. Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved.
The North Dakota DOT inspected the bridge and worked to make temporary repairs so additional concrete didn’t fall onto the roadway. Lane closures were in place during the evening while the repairs were made. The DOT will make additional assessments of the girders.
The State Patrol said the vehicle had passed under several other overpasses prior to the crash. An investigation is underway to determine whether a mechanical issue caused the arm of the excavator to rise prior to the 25th Street underpass.
The driver of the truck was cited for being over height.
