Italian authorities reported that a 51-year-old Scottish tourist took stones and a piece of brick from the ancient ruins of Pompeii. The man was seen by a tour guide picking up these items and placing them in his backpack during a visit to the archaeological site. Park staff and security alerted the Carabinieri police, who found the tourist at a nearby train station with the items in his possession. The man claimed he didn’t realize it was illegal to remove stones from Pompeii, and says he took them for his son’s rock collection. While no formal charges have been filed yet, the investigation is ongoing, and security measures at the site are set to be reinforced. (Story URL)
