Thousands of giant tarantulas are expected to emerge from the ground in parts of California, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, and Texas from August through October. While mostly harmless, these softball-sized spiders can bite, flick irritating hairs, or cause alarm as they move through campsites, backyards, and roads. The annual mating season will see male tarantulas venturing out in search of female partners, with sightings expected to peak in the coming months. Residents and visitors are advised to give these creatures space and avoid touching them, as their barbed hairs can cause irritation.
