A recent study examined how people across 20 countries perceive and judge excessive wealth. The research involved over 4,300 participants from diverse nations. Contrary to expectations, the findings reveal that people in wealthier and more equal societies are more likely to view having too much money as morally wrong compared to those living in poorer, more unequal countries. Interestingly, the researchers noted a connection between political ideology and moral acceptance of excessive wealth, with conservatives being more tolerant. Age also played a role, as older participants were more likely to view extreme wealth as acceptable. The study suggests that the “luxury of moral criticism” towards excess may be more affordable for wealthier communities, while in developing nations, billionaires might represent aspiration rather than moral failure.
