New York state’s Adirondack Mountains saw a bizarre incident this past weekend involving a group of hikers. According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, officials received a 911 call on Saturday from two hikers on Cascade Mountain reporting that their friend had died. However, when the hikers met up with the mountain’s summit steward, it became clear they had ingested hallucinogenic mushrooms and were in an altered mental state. The steward called for a forest ranger to escort the disoriented hikers to an ambulance. The supposedly deceased hiker later contacted authorities to confirm they were alive and uninjured. The ranger then escorted this hiker back to the group’s campsite, where they were reunited. The precise chain of events that led the two hikers to believe their companion had died remains unknown.
