DMV Drama: Man Causes 9K Damage Throwing Fish and Carrots (Click for Previous Story May 2024)
Joseph Schrader of Nebraska will be spending a year in jail after an incident last summer where he turned a DMV office into a seafood nightmare. Schrader, visibly agitated after the DMV didn’t issue him an ID, decided to vent his frustrations by flinging a bag of fish and carrots around the brand-new facility.
The chaos took place on May 17 at the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles office near Northwest First Street and West Highland Boulevard. The mess wasn’t minor—officers arrived to find food splattered across the floor, walls, and even the ceiling. According to court documents, the building “smelled heavily of fish,” as did Schrader himself when police tracked him down.
His justification? He told officers that “something fishy” was going on at the DMV, so he felt it was only fair to throw fish in return.
The damage, initially estimated at $9,000, was later adjusted to $3,305.50, sparing Schrader from a potential felony charge. However, he still received a one-year sentence for criminal mischief and 90 days for disturbing the peace, to be served concurrently.
As for the DMV staff, they probably learned that opening a new office comes with unexpected challenges—like needing industrial-strength air fresheners.
