The latest viral beauty trend involves smooshing a banana peel all over your face to help with wrinkles and inflammation
However, docs warn that you’re better off using actual skin products, as opposed to face fruit
Influencers are slapping banana peels on their faces, claiming it gives them a “natural Botox effect”. One content creator who made the face fruit go viral is makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes who posted a video of herself trying the trend, saying it made her skin feel softer and her face more “snatched”. However, doctors aren’t so convinced by this trend, saying, “There’s no scientific evidence to suggest that rubbing a banana peel on your face is going to help” with wrinkles or inflammation. While banana peels do contain antioxidants, the benefits are so small you likely won’t notice them, warns another doc.
Despite the skepticism from the medical community, social media users are raving about the banana peel hack, with one claiming their grandmother used it and had “zero wrinkles”. Doctors say the skin benefits of banana peels are minimal at best, and you’re better off investing in proven anti-aging products like vitamin C serums.
@geetayadavmd Say what?! 🍌😳 People are rubbing banana peels on their face as a DIY skincare hack claiming it tightens skin and smooths wrinkles like BOTOX? As a #dermatologist I have to say that I'm not a fan of putting food on the face. While banana peels do have some beneficial properties, they don't compare to the results of BOTOX or well-studied skincare products. If you're concerned about fine lines and wrinkles, talk to a dermatologist about your options. Let's stick to the tried and true and avoid the banana peel trend! #DermReactstoBananaPeels #dermreacts #dermatologist #fyp ♬ original sound – Dr. Geeta Yadav
