FARGO (KFGO) – While the Red River crest estimated at 35 feet in Fargo-Moorhead is considered major flooding, it’s a far cry from the record 2009 flood that hit 40.9 feet. Seeing the floodwaters over low area’s in both cities, it is dramatic, especially for newcomers who have not witnessed a flood here before.
John Eslinger, of Fargo, and Kristen Hurdelbrenk, of Moorhed were out checking on the Red River Flood early Monday morning from a popular vantage point, atop the Moorhead Center Mall parking ramp.
Both experienced the 2011 summer flood in Bismarck but had not seen anything like this before. Eslinger said he was alarmed to see how fast the river came up. He was jogging along the river days ago and now that same area is under water.
Hurdelbrank said seeing this flood, “is kind of crazy for me.”
The Red in Fargo-Moorhead has forced the closure of some low roads and shut down several bridges but no sandbagging has been required. Crews in both cities spent the weekend, making sure there were no problems with flood walls, lift stations and other flood protection. This flood is also the first test of Fargo’s new flood walls.
