ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota Senate Democrats have unveiled a tax relief plan that is similar to House Democrats’ plan in eliminating state income tax for some, but not all Minnesotans who receive Social Security benefits.
Both plans would eliminate the tax for about three-quarters of Social Security recipients, up from roughly half under current law, but would not totally repeal the tax as Republicans have been demanding.
As in House Democrats’ plan, Senate Democrats would give one-time rebates to families making up to $150,000 a year, but their $564 figure is less than half of what House Democrats propose and even less than the governor’s “Walz check” plan.
As the House proposes, the Senate plan also has child tax credits, childcare tax credits, and property tax relief.
