MOORHEAD (KFGO) – Moorhead City Engineer Bob Zimmerman expects a Red River spring flood in the top ten list, maybe even a top five flood year, but he said they will be ready.
Zimmerman cited the many permanent improvements made in the city.
“In terms of our flood fight, probably the number-one tool that we have is all of the mitigation that has been completed over the last 13 or so years,” Zimmerman said. “This is just a quick summary. This includes the permanent improvements that have been made by the city, as well as the permanent improvements that were made by the Buffalo-Red River Watershed District up in the Oak Port area, though all of those flood mitigation improvements – many, maybe all of those – will come into play during this year’s flood event.”
Zimmerman said since mitigation efforts were completed after the record 2009 flood, Moorhead has completed 336 property acquisitions, installed nearly 19 miles of levees and floodwalls, 5 removable floodwall closures, 24 storm water pump stations, 83 storm water gates and 6 sanitary sewer pump station improvements.
