WASHINGTON – Federal income tax returns are expected to be lower than last year.
“About 11 percent less per tax return,” IRS spokesman Michael Devine said. “That’s because many of the credits that were pumped up during COVID have returned to their 2019 levels.”
The deadline to file a 2022 return is April 18 and the IRS is encouraging electronic filing.
“E-file is the fastest and safest and absolutely the most accurate way to do your return because the software doesn’t make an arithmetic mistake. It doesn’t put the wrong number on the wrong line,” Devine said.
Devine said e-filing is the fastest way to get a return into the bank.
“When you e-file your return and use direct deposit – so the money goes right into your bank account – you get your tax return processed faster,” Devine said.
Devine said refunds can be expected within about 21 days and oftentimes, even faster.
