ST. PAUL, Minn. – A bill requiring background checks for private sales of guns is advancing in the Minnesota House.
Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus Vice President Rob Doar says it’s an additional hurdle for law-abiding gun owners.
According to data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, Doar says only 8% of illegally acquired firearms come from private sales.
Democratic Representative Brion Curran of Vadnais Heights noted the overall number of gun deaths in the U-S is more than 45,000 per year and 8% or 3,600.
The House Judiciary and Civil Law Committee also passed the “red flag” law to help identify people who are a danger to themselves or others.
