BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO/KCND) – Members of the North Dakota Industrial Commission have approved funding for five programs to help develop or renovate affordable housing units.
“This will help us to produce a total of 266 units,” Jennifer Henderson, Director of the North Dakota Housing Finance Agency’s Planning and Housing Development Division said. “However, 96 of those units are actually just a rehab. So, we’re not gaining too much more than 180 new units.”
Henderson said it’s a small step in addressing a deepening need for affordable housing…
“What we are seeing is that the growth in population is projected for 65 and older,” Henderson said. “We know that those household projections are going to be low, so we do know that there is a need for affordable rental in our future.”
Henderson said she is hoping lawmakers will allocate more funding toward the state Housing Incentive Fund when they meet in session early next year.
She said while that would help develop new units, it would still not meet the full need for affordable housing in the state.
