TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (UND Athletics) – No. 21 North Dakota (5-3, 4-2 MVFC) defeated Indiana State (1-8, 0-6 MVFC), 42-7, at Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The game was knotted up at 7-7 early in the second quarter before a pair of Sycamore turnovers led to Fighting Hawk touchdowns to put UND up by two scores (21-7) at the break. UND finished the game with 35 unanswered points.
Tommy Schuster paced the offense through the air, going 16-of-19 for 162 yards and two touchdowns. The two touchdowns thrown gave Schuster the UND Division I record for touchdown passes (37), while the 162 yards passing gives him 6,259 yards through the air to make him the all-time career passing yards leader at UND.
Garett Maag was the top receiver with five grabs for 71 yards and a score. Red Wilson was next with three catches for 29 yards. Isaiah Smith helped Schuster break the UND Division I touchdown record with a 16-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter.
Tyler Hoosman had 15 carries for a team-high 81 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Wilson added seven carries for 77 yards, scoring the first touchdown of his UND career on a 45-yard scamper. Smith also had seven rushes for 48 yards and a touchdown.
Twenty-one Fighting Hawks recorded at least one tackle in the game, led by Kason Kelley and Devon Krzanowski with six tackles apiece. Krzanowski, Jaelen Johnson and Dylan Boecker each recorded one sack.
The UND defense forced two turnovers, which helped give UND a 21-7 lead before halftime. Aaron Cooper forced a fumble that was recovered by Malachi Buckner and led to a Hoosman touchdown on the next play. C.J. Siegel picked off the Sycamores on the next possession, which led to Hoosman’s second touchdown of the day eight plays later.
North Dakota piled up 391 yards of offense with 229 yards rushing and 162 yards passing. Comparatively, Indiana State had 265 yards of offense with 139 yards through the air and 126 yards on the ground. The Fighting Hawks played a clean game with no turnovers, while forcing two Sycamore turnovers.
In the opening quarter, North Dakota took over at its own 26 after an Indiana State three-and-out. NoDak went 74 yards over the next 4:10 to take the early 7-0 lead with 9:05 left in the quarter. The drive was capped with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Schuster to Maag. In the drive, UND went 24 yards on the ground and 50 yards through the air.
Indiana State evened the game up at 7-7 in the early moments of the second quarter. On the possession, backup QB Gavin Screws went 6-for-6 on the final six passes of the drive. The ISU drive was highlighted by a one-handed 21-yard catch from Harry Van Dyne that went to review and was upheld. Justin Dinka knotted the game up four plays later on a two-yard touchdown rush.
Later in the quarter, North Dakota punted and Jack Wright downed the Sycamores at their own one-yard line. Two plays later, Aaron Cooper forced an ISU fumble that was recovered by Malachi Buckner. On the next play, Hoosman scampered in for the six-yard touchdown to put the Fighting Hawks up 14-7 with 8:29 left before intermission.
Midway through the quarter, Siegel picked off Screws and returned it 29 yards. Eight plays later, Hoosman extended North Dakota’s lead to 21-7, running it in from two yards out to put UND up 21-7 with 2:03 before intermission. Sacks from Krzanowski and Jaelen Johnson on the next Indiana State possession allowed the Hawks to hold the 21-7 lead at intermission.
Six plays into the second half, the Fighting Hawks went up 28-7 following a 45-yard touchdown scamper from Wilson. For Wilson, it was both the longest run of his UND career and his first touchdown in a North Dakota uniform.
The Hawks would extend their lead to 35-7 nine minutes later when Schuster found Smith for a 16-yard touchdown pass on 4th & 4. Smith would score again with 9:33 left in the game on a seven-yard touchdown rush to extend the lead to 42-7.

- North Dakota is now 1-0 all-time vs. Indiana State
- The 42 points are the most the Fighting Hawks have scored on the road since a 51-6 victory at Winona State in 2005.
- With 162 yards passing, Tommy Schuster now holds the all-time record in career passing yards for UND with 6,259 yards in his career. He passed Todd Kovash (1987-90) for the record, who had 6,234 yards.
- After a 16-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Smith in the third quarter, Schuster broke the Division I record for touchdown passes with 37. He passed Keaton Studsrud (2014-17), who threw 36 touchdowns in his career.
- Tyler Hoosman has now scored a touchdown in every game this season except one. Hoosman has now scored in six consecutive games.
- Hoosman is now tied with Keaton Studsrud (2014-17) on the UND Division I career touchdowns list at No. 8 with 12 TD’s.
- Red Wilson scored the first touchdown of his North Dakota career on a 45-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
- Both Luke Skokna and Creighton Mitchell received their first action on the season for UND and had rushes in the fourth quarter.
- This is the second game in a row where the Fighting Hawks finished +2.0 in turnover margin.
