MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is applauding the Department of Homeland Security for designating Ethiopia for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months.
The designation means that Ethiopian nationals in the U.S. who cannot safely return due to conflict-related violence and a humanitarian crisis may remain and work here until conditions in their home country improve.
Rep. Omar led a letter last month asking the Biden administration to designate TPS for Ethiopia. She said we must also do much more for the millions of people still in the region who have been displaced by this conflict.
Minnesota has a large Ethiopian community.
