GRAND FORKS, N.D.(UND Athletics) – No. 3 North Dakota overcame a pair of three-goal deficits to rally for a 5-5 tie against No. 8/7 Quinnipiac on Friday night inside a raucous Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.
Gavin Hain capped a furious rally in the third period with his fourth goal of the season to give UND (2-0-1) a 5-4 lead with just 11 minutes to play in the final stanza, but CJ McGee knotted the game at 5-5 just two minutes later to send the contest into overtime.
In the extra session, NoDak killed off a pair of 4-on-3 power plays for the Bobcats (1-0-2) to preserve the tie and remain unbeaten. The two sides played a three-person shootout to decide bragging rights in an already decided game, and it was the hosts coming out victorious, 2-1.
Quinnipiac jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes of hockey, converting on just seven shots to chase starting goaltender Drew DeRidder from the game. Sophomore Jakob Hellsten was solid in relief, allowing just two goals on 15 shots.
UND started its rally in the second period when freshman Dylan James potted his first goal in a North Dakota uniform just 2:52 into the frame by pouncing on a loose puck in the crease. Moments later, the Fighting Hawks looked to claw back to 3-2 on a tally by Mark Senden, but the play was deemed offside on a successful challenge by the Bobcats to keep the visitors in front by a pair.
QU increased its lead to 4-1 midway through the second period, but the hosts began to inch back into the contest again. In a stanza that saw UND hold a 21-7 shot advantage, Riese Gaber buried his second of the season on a sweet feed from Owen McLaughlin to cut the advantage to 4-2 after 40 minutes of play.
The Hawks used special teams to their advantage in the final period, with Jackson Blake weaving through the defense on a power play to trim the lead to 4-3 before Chris Jandric knotted the game less than two minutes later on another strike on the man advantage. Hain gave North Dakota the lead 34 seconds later, but QU tied the game to send the contest to overtime where the game finished in a 5-5 tie.
North Dakota and Quinnipiac close out the series tomorrow night at 6:07 p.m. from Ralph Engelstad Arena.
