WEST FARGO (KFGO) – A number of residents in West Fargo’s Charleswood area are dealing with a big problem — geese that have flocked there in fast-growing numbers. There’s a neighborhood pond there but residents say it’s property owners who are feeding the geese that are causing the issue. Upset residents have asked the city to crack down on the wildlife feeding within city limits.
Resident Donna Hentges made the point to city commissioners. She presented 128 signatures from those in her neighborhood who share her concerns. “The geese are claiming territory, they don’t want to be chased off the bike/waking paths, some of the geese are becoming aggressive, they’re destroying lawns and park board property and our yards can’t be enjoyed because of the goose poop,” she said.
Resident Kela Howell told commissioners the current ordinance only applies to the feeding of farm animals within the city limits which is illegal so a new, specific ordinance on geese has to be approved.
Mayor Bernie Dardis has appointed a committee made up of the police chief, the city attorney, the city administrator, and a city commissioner to come up with suggestions and have the full commission decide how the city will proceed with the goose problem.
