ST. PAUL – Former U-S Attorney for Minnesota Tom Heffelfinger was surprised that Derek Chauvin did not say he was sorry for his role in the death of George Floyd at Chauvin’s sentencing for violating Floyd’s civil rights.
Heffelfinger says he “would have thought he would have given an apology,” and that it would have had “a greater impact” on getting a shorter sentence. Chauvin did speak at his sentencing and said that he wishes Floyd’s children “all the best in their life” and that they have “excellent guidance in becoming good adults.”
Chauvin will serve more than 20 years for the civil rights charges concurrently with his 22-point-five-year state murder conviction.
