What the what!?! Rule #1 for being out in nature never use your phone in a pit/vault toilet! If you have to use one all your focus needs to be on the hovering!
A California woman became stuck in a vault toilet at the top of Mount Walker on Tuesday after falling in the vault toilet.
Mount Walker is located in Washington State and is part of the Olympic National Forest.
The woman told rescuers that she fell in because she was trying to get her cell phone after dropping it into the vault toilet while she was using it. She desperately tried to dismantle the toilet to get the phone, but when that didn’t work, she said she used her dog’s leashes to try and fish it out.
Once that didn’t work she used the leashes as support to lower herself into the toilet and during this the leashes gave away, so she slid and fell into the vault head-first.
She stuck for around 20 minutes trying to get out before using her phone to call 911.
Both the Brinnon Fire Department and Quilcene Fire Rescue responded to Mount Walker parking lot to get the woman out. The crews were able to pull the woman out to safety. She was washed down and given a hazmat-type of suit to wear and rescue crews strongly recommended that she seek medical attention after being exposed to human waste, but the woman declined.
The woman would thank the first responders and continued on her journey back to California. Lesson learned today, don’t use your phone on a vault toilet!
