The holidays are a time where everyone wants to feel jolly and merry – but this year, make sure you watch your intake of alcohol. Don’t get me wrong – almost all of us have experienced some negative effects of alcohol in our lives (especially me in college – once I learned how to take a shot of tequila, it all went downhill for me!) But research shows that over-indulging in alcoholic beverages at a certain age can actually be DETRIMENTAL to your health.
Who would have thought that the older you get, the less your body is able to process alcohol. If you’re over the age of 65, drinking a little too much can actually DAMAGE your brain. There’s three major points where your brain changes quite a bit: as a fetus during pregnancy, late adolescence, and older adulthood. Older adulthood is the scariest though – even moderate drinking can SHRINK the neurons in your brain and cause your brain to slowly deteriorate. This hinders the way you problem solve, causes memory issues, and can even make changes to your personality.
Long story short: Just remember, this holiday season, I get that hanging out with your family all day can be tough and stress-inducing. But remember to drink in moderation, and throw in a water every once in a while. 🙂
Happy holidays! And if you wanted to learn more about this study, go ahead and click here.
