It’s nearly Thanksgiving, and now is a time where people start to feel really grateful for the things they have in life. Usually, this time of year is also associated with GIVING – and a new survey asked Americans what their favorite ‘good deed’ is, and how they feel after doing something nice for someone. Unsurprisingly, 92% of people felt better about themselves and had a better day when they took time to do something kind for someone else. Our favorite acts of kindness include:
- Taking the time with someone we love to help them with something they need done. This is my personal favorite!! In college, I was super stressed with studying and house work, and I had friends who came over and helped me fold a couple loads of laundry. It meant so much to me I cried.
- Spreading the wealth. Donating money to an organization in need, paying for someone’s coffee behind you in the drive-thru, or maybe taking someone out for a meal. Even though they’re monetary deeds, things like this don’t have to be expensive and can make someones day.
- Complimenting a stranger. Do you know how many women in bar bathrooms have told me my outfit was cute and it made me feel so good about myself?? Never underestimate the power of a few kind words.
- Smiling at someone, holding a door open, maybe offering to help them carry something heavy. I can name quite a few times that a random person held the door for me when I had my hands full that made me believe in humanity for a little bit.
Morale of the story: doing a little act of kindness every day not only benefits the recipient of your good deed, but you yourself. Try making someone’s day today. Venmo your friend some cash for a coffee, or tell a coworker you appreciate them. It’ll go a long way, I promise!
(Also, if you’re in Fargo-Moorhead and know people who need a pick-me-up this holiday season, submit their name for an act of kindness. Y94 is teaming up with Cricket Wireless to spread some love for the rest of the year!!)
XOXO, Alyssa
