DULUTH, Minn. – Starting October 15, retailers in Duluth will begin charging 5 cents for each plastic carry-out bag issued for a purchase.
The COVID-19 pandemic had put plans for the fee on hold after the original ordinance was passed almost two years ago. It was supposed to take effect in April of 2020 but was put on hold.
City officials say the purpose of the ordinance is to reduce litter and the environmental damage done by single-use carry-out bags. Duluth stores are required to post signs letting customers know about the charge.
