Depictions of smoking are up on TV, and Netflix is a massive offender. And they’re promising to cut down.
A
report
by the Truth Initiative . . . you know, those people who run all the anti-smoking ads . . . says tobacco use is up on TV in general.
But it’s WAY worse on Netflix, thanks to shows like
“House of Cards”
,
“Orange is the New Black”
, and especially
“Stranger Things”
. . . which is particularly troubling since it’s geared toward younger audiences.
The study even took place BEFORE Season 3 of
“Stranger Things”
, which once again contains a bunch of smoking.
After the report came out, Netflix said it’s going to start cutting out smoking and e-cigarette use except for, quote, “reasons of historical or factual accuracy” . . . or cases where it’s quote, “essential to the creative vision of the artist or because it’s character-defining.”
They will also include warnings of tobacco use in their ratings, so people can make informed decisions about what they watch.
