MINNESOTA (KFGO) – Attorneys who represented Nicole Mitchell in her Detroit Lakes burglary trial react to the former state senator winning a City Council seat in Woodbury, Minnesota.
Mitchell was convicted in September 2025 of breaking into her stepmother’s home while she was sleeping. She won one of two seats up for grabs among 10 candidates receiving 13% of votes.
“She really cares about public service and it is clear that community believed in her well enough to vote for her despite the fact that she was convicted of trying to check on her step-mom,” Bruce Ringstrom, Jr. said on “Afternoons Live” on KFGO.
“I’m sure every person in Woodbury talked to her on her doorstep and it’s a lot harder to not vote for someone when they can tell you what happened and look you straight in the face. It takes a lot of courage,” Dane Dekrey said.
Mitchell voted for a bill in 2023 Governor Tim Walz signed into law that restored voting rights for those with felony convictions on probation or parole.
Minnesota’s constitution ties voting rights to Minnesotans’ eligibility to run for office.
Ringstrom and DeKrey hired a New York law firm to work with Mitchell to appeal her conviction.
