CLAY COUNTY, Minn. (KFGO) – Republican State Senate candidate Austin Peterson of Hawley said he’s lucky to be alive after a vehicle cut him off leading to a rollover crash.
Peterson told KFGO a vehicle entered his lane on State Highway 32 near Rollag, Minnesota around 6:30 PM on Tuesday, October 27 forcing him to avoid a head-on collision by steering into the ditch.
Peterson said a good Samaritan helped him get out of his overturned pickup since he wasn’t able to get out of his seat belt. He was taken to a Fargo hospital.

“I am grateful to be alive,” Peterson said in a statement to KFGO. “The first responders from Barnesville and Hawley were outstanding. I’m incredibly thankful for their professionalism, quick response, and the care they showed me. I was able to provide the Minnesota State Patrol with a description of the other vehicle. Thank you to the good Samaritan who stopped to help and to all the first responders who came to our aid. We won’t forget it.”
A post on Peterson’s campaign’s Facebook page said Tuesday was he and his wife Jeramie’s 19th wedding anniversary.
Peterson, a Hawley School Board Member, is running against DFL State Senator Rob Kupec of Moorhead for his District 4 seat which includes Clay and Becker counties.
