MAYVILLE, N.D. (KVRR) – Twenty-three-year-old Matthew Donovan is in a medically-induced coma due to a helmet-to-helmet hit from the a member of the defense from Simpson University.
According to Mayville State Head Coach Rocky Larson, it was not an illegal hit, and Donovan was blindsided. When Larson noticed Donovan was hit, he says Donovan was unresponsive and took him to get examined by the trainers.
It wasn’t until after the game, that Larson realized something was wrong.
“The emotion right now is, you’re praying for the kid. He’s tough, he’s a fighter, toughest kid I know, he’s 5’7 155 pounds playing college quarterback.” Larson says.
Larson and some teammates went to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo to see Matt and noticed his strong will to never give up.
One of the teammates Kelby Azure wants people to know that he, along with his the rest of his teammates are behind him, and hopes for a speedy recovery.
“You’re praying he’s okay because in a situation of the manner, when the brain’s involved you don’t know how fast something can go from 0 to 100.” Azure says.
More than $77,000 has been raised in a GoFundMe to assist Matt with his recovery.
