Frode Tilden in Lillehammer, Norway (KVRR)
LILLEHAMMER (KFGO-KVRR) – A Fargo man is remembering his encounter with Norway’s King Harald V, who died Friday at age 89.
Norway native Frode Tilden was coincidentally vacationing in Lillehammer when the king passed away.
Tilden says his once-in-a lifetime chance to have dinner with the king took place in Iowa while Tilden was a foreign exchange student.
“We were at the local golf course at the dinner, so it’s not very often you’re able to eat dinner with your own king,” Tilden said.
“King Harald was a very beloved king here in Norway. He was kind of like our grandpa for everybody here.”
Harald’s son, Crown Prince Haakon, succeeds his father as King Haakon the Eighth.
