FARGO (KFGO/KVRR) – Former Fargo mayor Dr. Tim Mahoney has accepted the position of Health Officer for Fargo Cass Public Health despite his confirmation snagging at city hall. Commissioner Michelle Turnberg had the item removed from the consent agenda over concerns about transparency and pay. She wanted the confirmation delayed until more budget talks.
Turnberg’s motion failed, and Mahoney was confirmed on a 3-2 vote.
“Right now there are a lot of people that smell something fishy, that is the truth. So, do not call it bad blood or whatever that’s absolutely not the case. If you’re listening to your constituents you know that we need to be more transparent,” said Turnberg who attended the meeting by phone.
Jenn Faul, director of Public Health, says there were several qualified candidates that were interviewed in July and Dr. Mahoney was offered and accepted the position.
It requires around 4 hours per week in office or remote and he’ll be paid $3,200 per month. He will also be paid $173 per pre-approved external media event and his salary will increase annually by $200 per month on the anniversary of the contract.
Mahoney will take over on September 1 and hold the office for a period of five years. He will replace Dr. Jessie Lindemann who left the position after a year. He served as mayor of Fargo from 2014 until this past June.
