MINNEAPOLIS (KFGO) – A Minneapolis father and son are facing fraud charges after they allegedly filed false income tax returns for themselves and others claiming million of dollars in false refund amounts.
Court documents says Lamar Burgess, 44, and his son Lamar Burgess, 23, would charge taxpayers a portion of their refund in exchange for filing a return using false employment and tax credit information, including credits intended for those who could not work during the covid-19 pandemic.
Court documents say 44-year-old Burgess taught himself how to file the returns through instruction manuals and videos, he allegedly used a guide titled “Turbo Tax Sauce — The Self Employed Way”.
“Fraud against the United States is a serious offense and those who fabricate returns or misuse information to enrich themselves will be held accountable. Our office remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of federal tax programs and protecting the public from those who seek to exploit them,” said U.S. Attorney Daniel N. Rosen.
“This father and son duo turned filing fraudulent tax returns into a family business,” said Adam Jobes, Special Agent in Charge, IRS Criminal Investigation, Chicago Field Office. “False refund claims steal from every honest taxpayer who follows the law and pays their fair share. IRS-CI special agents will continue using their expertise in forensic accounting to expose tax fraud schemes and bring fraudulent tax preparers to justice.”
In addition to charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States, Burgess and his son are also facing six counts each of making false claims.
