Levi Bachmeier, North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction
FARGO (KFGO/KVRR) — North Dakota’s Superintendent of Public Instruction says he is optimistic about the future of public education, despite cuts to the Department of Education.
Levi Bachmeier says he believes the federal government will not allow the department to be dismantled.
On Tuesday, Education Secretary Linda McMahon was questioned about her department’s decision to cut down programs and push them into other departments.
The education budget for 2027 was released on Friday with $2.3 billion in cuts announced.
“I think that is just absolutely the right way to go. I don’t want lobbyists from California trying to influence the education that our students receive in North Dakota. And so I think this move to empower states to give control back to states is absolutely the right move,” said Bachmeier.
The budget proposal is a recommendation and Congress will determine the final funding levels.
